How to play
  • Click a unit to select it. White tiles are where it can go; red tiles are enemies it can strike.
  • Settlers found cities. Workers spend stars on farms, mines, pastures, plantations, fisheries and roads inside your borders.
  • Villages dot the wild land. Walk any unit into one; if it starts its next turn there, claim the village as a new town. Rivals race you for them.
  • As a city grows to 3, 5, 7 and 9 people it earns a reward: pick one of two (artisans or a scouting party, walls or a treasury, wider borders or a festival, a park or a champion).
  • Learn Sailing to put land units on boats in the shallows; Navigation opens the deep ocean.
  • Thirty-three techs unlock units, buildings, nine world wonders and the Starward Ark.
  • Every tribe has a trait of its own, shown under its name. Pick one that suits how you like to play.
  • Search ancient ruins for rewards, and be first to find the natural wonders for legacy. Cities that work a wonder's tile gain richly.
  • Surround enemies in the open: each other unit of yours beside a target adds 15% to an attack (towns can't be outflanked). Moving next to an enemy fighter ends a move. Units gain experience and earn up to three promotions.
  • Ambitions are goals every tribe races for. Being first earns the most legacy.
  • Neighbors without a treaty grow resentful. An angry tribe that feels stronger declares war, and one that is losing asks for peace. Attacking anyone starts a war. Retrain veteran units into stronger ones for stars, inside your borders.
  • Pottery unlocks the Caravan. Walk one next to another city, at least three tiles from its home, to open a trade route that pays every turn. Routes to rival cities also teach and build goodwill, but only pay while you are at peace.
  • Tribes at peace buy, sell and swap techs. Open Tribes, then Trade. Rivals will make you offers too.
  • Play with friends: host an online game, share the room code or link, and everyone picks a tribe. Turns are played at the same time; the turn ends when everyone has pressed End turn.
  • Blight spreads from turn 16. Stand beside it and Cleanse. Events ask you to choose, and doctrines at turns 10, 20, 32 and 46 shape your tribe.
  • Win by Legacy, by conquest, by launching the Starward Ark, or by having the most Legacy when time runs out.
